Red Cross confirms 4-storey building collapse in Anambra, evacuates victims
Three persons lost their lives early hours of Tuesday while two others escaped when a four-storey building collapsed in Okeani village, Oko community in Anambra state.The building, located close to the Federal Polytechnic, Oko and owned by an Oko indigene based in Europe, reportedly collapsed at about 2am yesterday preceding a heavy downpour around 4 pm on Monday.
Daily Trust gathered that the deceased, all from the northern part of the country, and construction workers in the building were fast asleep when the structure came down on them.
A neighbour, Angela Ivories, who spoke to our correspondent, said one of the survivors, simply identified as Samuel, a student of the polytechnic, sustained fracture of the hand.
She revealed that part of the building which was near completion had collapsed on Monday afternoon after a heavy downpour, a development she said was enough signal for the deceased to have hurriedly quit the building.
"After the first set of the building collapsed on Sunday, Musa suggested to his co-workers to vacate the building, but they didn't heed to his advice" she added.
According to her, it was not up to two hours they were advised to vacate the building that the rest of the structure came falling.
Daily Trust learnt that the police from Ajali and Oko police stations led by the DPO and officials of Anambra Town Planning and the Building materials laboratory officials were part of the team that carried out the rescue operation.
Confirming the incident, the state Chairman, Nigerian Red Cross society, Professor Peter Katchy, said the bodies of the deceased were excavated from the debris, adding that the area has been cordoned off
