Nigeria flood: Thousands in dire need
of basic life support
The worst is
still being expected as the torrential rainfall seems to have no plan to
recede. A rapid assessment conducted by the Nigerian Red Cross Society shows
that over 1.5 million people are affected. It is now a national concern as the
Federal Government has declared state of emergency in four states and put eight
others on surveillance.
“Many of the affected people
are in shock. Their homes and means of livelihood have been washed away,” said Abubakar
Kende, Nigerian Red Cross Society’ Secretary General. “With
thousands displaced and in makeshift camps set up in schools, religious
institutions and with host communities, people are in dire need of food,
shelter, clothing and other basic life support.”
Without adequate sanitation
facilities and access to clean water, thousands of people are at risk of
cholera and other water-borne diseases. Nigeria is already fighting a cholera
outbreak in some states
Nigerian Red Cross volunteers are
helping communities affected by the devastating floods across 34 out of 37
states (including the Federal Capital), continuing to assist affected
communities with search and rescue, first aid, evacuation to health facilities
and life-saving messages assisting the affected persons to know what to do to
avoid or manage diseases outbreak.
‘’The planned response
reflected the situation and information available at that time which will now
be adjusted based on current developments and more detailed assessments along
rivers Benue and Niger that almost divide Nigeria into two equal parts,” says
Kende.
He therefore calls on well-meaning
Nigerians, International communities and cooperate organizations to support the
Nigerian Red Cross Society to alleviate the sufferings of the affected
population.
